Subregions Established
Phase 2 of the project has begun, and we are gathering economic and demographic data for each county in the region. We will be reporting the data for the region as a whole, as well as for subregions within the study area. Regional Planning Commissions have separated the Upper Peninsula into three sub-regions: West, Central, and East. However, as the study region includes the Wisconsin counties of Marinette and Florence, we were faced with a question of how best to organize the data. Should the Wisconsin counties be considered a separate region? Should they be included with one of the existing three subregions? After discussing this matter with our staff liaison who discussed the issue with the steering committee members in the counties involved, we have determined that the best solution is to further divide the central subregion into two subregions, a South Central subregion including Florence and Marinette Counties, as well as Menominee and Dickinson Counties, and a North Central subregion, consisting of the previously defined central region, minus Menominee and Dickinson Counties. Although it is likely that the appendices of the final report will contain data for each county in the region, the body of the report will primarily include data according to the following organizational scheme:
